Home / Hot Water Heat Pumps
Cut the energy used to heat your water with an efficient hot water heat pump system, professionally supplied and installed by Primo Plumbing.
Hot water heat pumps use energy from the surrounding air to heat your water, using significantly less electricity than a conventional electric hot water cylinder. They can be a smart option for replacing an ageing cylinder, upgrading from low pressure, moving away from gas or solar hot water, or installing an efficient hot water system in a new home.
Primo Plumbing can take care of the complete installation, including supplying the system, plumbing installation and coordinating the electrical work required.
Heat pump water heaters use heat from the surrounding air rather than relying solely on electricity to generate heat. Depending on the system and household, this can substantially reduce the energy required for hot water. Rheem states that models in its current range can save around 70% or more on water-heating energy costs compared with traditional water heaters.
Water heating is a significant part of household energy use. A heat pump system provides a practical way to reduce the energy required to keep hot water flowing throughout your home, helping lower electricity use while still delivering reliable hot water.
An outdoor integrated heat pump system can replace a traditional indoor hot water cylinder, potentially freeing up valuable cupboard or storage space inside your home. It’s a particularly useful option when renovating or when you simply want to make better use of the space available inside your home.
Hot water heat pumps aren't only for new builds. They can be a practical upgrade when replacing an ageing electric cylinder, moving from low to mains pressure, or changing from gas or solar hot water. Primo can assess your existing system and recommend an option that suits your home and household hot water needs.
A hot water heat pump works differently from a conventional electric cylinder. Rather than relying primarily on an electric element to generate heat, it extracts heat energy from the surrounding air and transfers it into your water.
The result is an efficient hot water system that can substantially reduce the electricity required for water heating while still providing the hot water your household needs.
A hot water heat pump works a little like a refrigerator in reverse. Instead of creating all of its heat directly from electricity, it extracts heat energy from the surrounding air and transfers that energy into the water stored in the cylinder.
Because much of the heat comes from the ambient air, considerably less electrical energy is required than with conventional electric resistance water heating. The system can continue operating throughout the year and does not rely on direct sunlight.
For many North Auckland households, a hot water heat pump can be a practical replacement or upgrade for an existing hot water system.
They can be particularly worth considering if you’re:
The right system depends on your household’s hot water requirements, the available installation space and your existing plumbing. Dan can assess your property and recommend an appropriate system rather than simply selling you a particular unit.
Discuss the household's hot water use and existing system.
Select the appropriate heat pump system and capacity.
Professional plumbing installation and coordination of associated work where required.
Set up and test the system so it's ready for everyday use.
From assessing your existing hot water system through to installation and commissioning, Primo Plumbing takes care of the complete process.
Primo Plumbing supplies and installs quality hot water heat pump systems from trusted brands including Rheem and Haier, with options to suit different households, properties and hot water demands.

Hot water heat pumps can significantly reduce the energy used to heat your water compared with a conventional electric hot water system. Actual savings depend on your household, hot water use and the system installed. Rheem states that models in its current range can save around 70% or more on water-heating energy costs compared with traditional water heaters.
A hot water heat pump extracts heat energy from the surrounding air and transfers it into the water stored in the cylinder. Because it uses ambient heat rather than relying solely on an electric element to generate heat, it can use considerably less electricity than a conventional electric hot water system.
In many homes, yes. A hot water heat pump can be a great option when replacing an ageing electric cylinder, upgrading from low to mains pressure, or moving away from gas or solar hot water. Dan can assess your existing system, household requirements and available installation space to determine the best option for your home.
The cost depends on the heat pump system selected, your existing hot water setup, installation location and any plumbing or electrical work required. Primo Plumbing supplies the unit, completes the plumbing installation and coordinates the electrician, giving you one point of contact for the complete job. Contact Dan for an assessment and quote based on your property.
That depends on the number of people in your household and how much hot water you use. As a guide, Rheem rates its 178L AmbiPower MDc-180 for households of up to four people, while its 260L AmbiPower 280e and AmbiHeat HDc-270 are rated for households of up to six. Dan can recommend the appropriate capacity based on how your household actually uses hot water.
Integrated hot water heat pumps are generally installed outdoors with sufficient space and the required clearances around the unit. The location also needs to work with your home's existing plumbing and electrical supply. Dan will assess the available space and recommend a practical position, taking into account access, performance, noise and proximity to bedrooms or neighbouring properties.
They do make some noise while operating, although modern systems are designed for residential use. Noise varies by model. Rheem's current AmbiPower and AmbiHeat models are rated at approximately 47–48 dB(A) at one metre. Positioning is important, so Primo will consider nearby bedrooms and neighbouring properties when recommending where the unit should be installed.
Installation time depends on your existing hot water system, where the new unit will be located and whether plumbing or electrical alterations are required. Primo Plumbing manages the plumbing installation and coordinates the electrical work, so Dan can give you a clearer indication of timing once he's assessed your particular property.
Yes. Hot water heat pumps use heat from the surrounding air rather than sunlight, so they can continue producing hot water throughout the year, including cooler weather. Operating ranges vary between models. Rheem's current range, for example, is specified to operate at temperatures below 0°C, making them well suited to New Zealand conditions.
Primo Plumbing provides a 12-month workmanship warranty on the installation. Manufacturer warranties vary by system. Rheem's current heat pump range includes a 7-year cylinder warranty, along with additional parts and labour cover for specified components, subject to Rheem's warranty terms and conditions. Your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act are not affected.
